It's funny how many of these type of threads show up. It seems like most of you have been around since the dawn of time and were there from he beginning. For those of you that were, FANTASTIC, I'm kinda jealous. I'm 36, been to 4 shows, and well I can't say I'm happy that he plays Glory Days or that they changed Pirate Looks at 40( love Nadirah, but don't ruin the song for God sake). The only thing that makes it a bad setlist to me is the amount of cover songs he does. On the plus side to all of you that don't like the songs you've mentioned( I agree, MATH SUX, was a bad idea to even begin with), when he plays those songs:YOU CAN GO GET A BEER!! :o :o
We go to these shows to be with friends, listen to the music, be at a BUFFETT show, and have a good time.
I guess I'm not as jaded as most of you.
I'm just glad he's still out enjoying what he does
just tryin' to get by being quiet and shy...

[quote="JustDucky"]There are a couple of repeats but that's just because of the songs being what they are:

You Had To Be There - Come Monday - only because he overdubbed the vocal. Otherwise there isn't a bad or worst song on here.

Is this true? I went back and listened today..it didn't sound any different to me.
Tryin to act like I got something planned......

It's an overdub. Listen to the timbre of the speaking before the song. Listen to how the voice will have minor quirks in levels in the previous songs.

Come Monday - listen on head phones - you can hear the live vocal bleeding through (most likely) the drums. The tone and timbre of the vocal is completely different from the rest of the tunes.

Hell, his voice is even different.

Almost all of the Stones' live albums have vocal overdubs. And guitars. But from what I can tell YHTBT is almost completely live.

What about a 2 set list format, alternating night to night - splitting up the SYKBH, but keeping songs that most people know and can sing along to.?With the exception of 3 songs, no repeats. I took the top 30 or so songs Jimmy has played the most (according to the BN song database) so most people should know them. Throw in a few rare gems like he does now each tour (for the 80% to sit down to), I'll give him one cover song and the last song he has played differently every night.

Set list #1 (not in order)
1. Margaritaville
2. Fins
3. Come Monday
4. Volcano
5. APL@40
6. BEG
7. 5:00 Somewhere
8. WDWGDAS
9. Boat Drinks
10. He Went to Paris
11. Fruitcakes
12. Coconut Telegraph
13. We Are the People
14. Far Side of the World
15. Stars on the Water
16. Gypsies in the Palace
17. Havana Daydreamin'
18. Accoustic rare gem
19. Beach band rare gem
20. Rare gem
21. Rare gem
22. Mandatory cover
23. Local song for 1 show only

Set list #2 (not in order)
1. Margaritaville
2. Fins
3. Come Monday
4. Cheeseburger
5. OPH
6. Southern Cross
7. Changes
8. SOASOAS
9. Grapefruit
10. Pencil Thin
11. Last mango in Paris
12. The Weather is Here
13. School Boy Heart
14. Cousin in Miami
15. Jamaica Mistaica
16. Knees of My Heart
17. Tryin to Reason
18. Accoustic rare gem
19. Beach band rare gem
20. Rare gem
21. Rare gem
22. Mandatory cover
23. Local song for 1 show only

That's a nice idea but it's still not different enough, not challenging enough. These SJPTD fans need to have their heads rattled with something - ohmygod - different. New. Not familiar.

Thank you. I can't believe it took this many posts to get to "Pre You". OMG. I mean there are some songs I'm not crazy about, most are on people's list (Math, Elvis, You Call It Jogging, Baby's Gone Shopping, and all the covers). But this song just SUCKS! How did he even release this? It makes me cringe every time I hear it. Which is only on Radio Margaritaville. Once a year.

That's rich. People go off about how great the actual garbage tunes are (Cultuarl Infidel, Vampires...the entire Last Mango album) and now y'all are stabbing at a beautiful slow ballad that hinges on stoned out jazz?

Where the hell do you come from? I know a lot of people - people that are beyond the SYKBH/box set/MMIM clan - that love this song.

What, it isn't Cheeseburger enough?

Come on.

Stoned out jazz? That's a stretch. How about the words? The way he croons the title. You can't like that. Are you kidding me? Then again, you are "Just Ducky". BTW - I hate Cheesebuger, I don't have the box set or SYKBH.

OK there JBnut. You little cereal you.

My description of Pre-You musically is right on. For Jimmy Buffett, it's as close to stoned out jazz as he's ever gotten. It is a little...soft at times. A bit mushy. But, compared to his entire catalog, it's way off the charts as being different. So it doesn't sit in your bowl at all. But I don't think it SUCKS or is his worst ever or whatever it is you said.

Yeah yeah yeah, my name. It was given to me, I didn't pick it. And I'm too lazy to get another one. I think it's PHJ's way of sort of poking fun at me from this place in a fun way since I go against the grain and tend to say things on purpose to stir people up. Sense of humor and all that. Which a lot of people seem to take too seriously.

It is funny though - pick your least favorite/worst song from each album for a set list. In a strange way it lets us know that SOME people have actually listened to all the albums. We didn't do the worst song on SYKBH, MMIM or he box set. That would be funny.

Some albums don't have a least favorite/bad song. It's mainly the latter day records it seems.

You're right, "it sucks" is too harsh. Sorry about the name. We're all in this together. Phins up!

More old gems

Post by sharklvr »

I saw Jimmy at the Fillmore last Oct and his set was awesome (and different from the rest of the tour) For starters, bustin out God's Own Drunk for the first time since what seems like YHTBT. As for cover songs, I like them...once. Rainy Day Woman was great, on top of the fact the Reefers decided to play it while eating dinner before the show (rehearsed it once about anhour beforehand). The gem I am would like to hear/see is Little Miss Magic and Jimmy being the only one on stage.

I still love his concerts. Maybe a lot do sit down for Miss You So Badly, that just means I can see better andhear better since drunk whose only cd is SYKBH is taking a leak. For all of you whose feathers are ruffled b/c of his set list...quite whining or stay home. Just remember, he will probably play your "Little Miss Magic" when you do.

The only song I absolutely change, every time it comes on, is "Good Night Irene". Cannot stand that one. Other than that, I'm pretty forgiving.

Words Songs

Post by Butch11208 »

As a long time Jimmy fan who has seen 60+ shows (first one in '82), I enjoyed reading these posts. I share some similar thoughts on Jimmy "selling out". Let me first begin by saying I have much more tolerance for some of the worst songs that have been posted. More on that later. However, I do believe that Jimmy has been on cruise control for some time now but it is refreshing to see Fingers back on stage with him, albeit only for shows here and there. I did attend the Alpine show this past weekend and really believe that the harmonica sound really adds a lot to the show and also revisits some of the familiar sounds of days past.
One possible solution to this issue of Jimmy catering to the frat and bucket crowd would be to add in some some variation of the beach band (Jimmy, Mac, Utley, Greenidge and Fingers) that could do theatre tours when he not playing the big sheds. It would at these venues that Jimmy could be more creative with the setlists. Just a thought.
Here is my list of the worst songs that Jimmy has ever recorded (leaving out the first couple releases):
Autour Du Rocher (hands down the worst ever)
Remittance Man
Diamond as Big as a Ritz
False Echoes
Math Suks
Reggae Accident
Desperation Samba
Altered Boy

Remittance Man, one of my very favorites. Guess our differences make this interesting.

Although taken from an earlier posting of mine to another similar thread, it still rings true in this discussion......

I've said it many times, what other artist gives his fans live access to almost every show? None that I know of. And thanks for doing so, Jimmy!

We fans are spoiled somewhat in being able to compare one show with another with another. If we were able to hear another of our favorite artists (pick one) over multiple shows I'm sure we'd hear roughly the same setlist, including covers, stage comments, etc.

Like most of you, I have come to admire JB as a songwriter over the years and would love nothing more than an entire concert, tour, and/or CD/DVD having nothing but his original songs. But the fact is Jimmy has a deep respect for other songwriters & performers, always has. In fact, as my wife says, most of his covers we enjoy more than the original recordings. And JB enjoys playing covers. Last year at Nissan after BEG he proudly declared "I like playing that song........"

So, at this point in his long career, I have a pretty good feeling that Jimmy will continue to play whatever Jimmy wants to play. He's earned that right in my book.....

We all have the inherent right to agree to disagree about what songs we'd like to hear at each show. Maybe we just need to take a deep breath of appreciation and enjoy this wonderful ride before it really comes to an end.......
